Handmade Balay basket for table or decoration.
The Balay is a concave basket woven from guarumo palm. Made by the Cubeo ethnic group from the Vaupés jungle, Colombia, from a weave of red, black, green, yellow and ecru colors, which follows the ancestral idea that it contains the messages spoken by the father. They must be strong and compact so that "nothing" of that knowledge falls out.
he material used to make Balay is called GUARUMA or CHOCOLATILLO, which is found at the headwaters of the canals in the jungle. It is the main raw material and is made with the other secondary materials which are: BEJUCO YARE, BEJUCO GUACAMAYO.
The process is carried out in several stages:
1. The material is removed
2. The material that is the GUARUMA is scraped and washed
3. Paint the material
4. Remove the fiber
5. Weave the balay
6. Shape the balay and border with macaw vine
7. Paint the edge
8. Finish with the yare vine
These are the steps involved in the process of making balay, as well as their respective meanings.
